Earth Science Models

For my lesson plan, I had students create topographic maps and models of the landscape of a golf course. It was a wonderful project and the results were phenomenal! Students who rarely turn in work had some of the best projects. To link the idea to student understanding, I compared the project a mini or regular golf course. I also brought in my WII on Friday when we have only 30 minute periods and let the kids see the WII golf course and how the colors change as the landscape changes. The projects were made out of everything from clay, cardboard, wood, legos, cake, and even rice dyed different colors.

Your students' models are very impressive! I agree that map skills are important, especially topographic, as they help students understand differences in landscapes and connect to the movement of earth materials to create the differences in elevation. I agree with the usefulness of "check-in" days (I call them mid-point checks). It not only helps students better understand the expectations, it also helps clear up any misconceptions. Thanks for sharing your project!

Hello!

My goodness - you have some very artistic and talented students! It is very encouraging to hear that you had some students who usually don't turn in work participate in the project. Have you asked them what they liked about the project? I was just thinking that although not every assignment can involve a model, there might be some suggestions you could utilize in future lessons based on the feedback you receive. Amy
